The founder of a school for orphaned children in Nigeria, Zannah Mustapha has won a top United Nations award.

Zannah Mustapha was awarded on Monday with one of the United Nations’ top awards.

The UNHCR’s Nansen Refugee Award honours people who dedicate their lives to helping victims of war.

Mustapha was awarded due to the role he played in helping children whose parents were killed by the dreaded Boko Haram group.

According to report, Mustapha was said to have helped secure the deal to release schoolgirls held by Boko Haram.

Zannah Mustapha, who is in his late-50s, said the award was unexpected but he was “exceedingly happy” to have been nominated for such.

As he says “I look forward to being a worthy ambassador… for such a noble award,” he told AFP in an interview in the capital, Abuja.
