Teachers in Enugu has raised their concern over the handing over of Primary and secondary schools in the states to missions.
While commemorating the 2017 World Teachers Day, the Enugu State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, through its chairman, Ozo Paul Nnaji reacted to the state’s plans to return schools to missions. He said returning schools to churches will bring about a crisis in the educational sector.
Nnaji in his address drew the attention of the state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwanyi to a 2017 law (Amendment) which attempts to hand over schools to churches.
In his address he said.
“The overbearing influence of the church on the school system should be resisted to avoid industrial pandemonium in the education sector.”

He also lamented the shortage of teachers in the school system noting that in 2017 not less than 500 teachers were either retired or died without any replacement.
He said Enugu State was in need of nothing less than 6000 teachers. He, however, appealed also for the renovation of the teacher’s housing scheme in the state.
