5 bad habits parents should watch out for in their teenagers

Teenagers usually believe they are entitled to more freedom than they can handle, and while there are no “bad” teenagers, some rebel more than others.

Even when these teens seem responsible enough for his or her age, there are aspects of their growing up that should be put in check (no matter what explanation they provide). If parents do not pay attention to their kids at this stage in their lives, they are making a big mistake.

Teens are going to be teenagers. We’re setting these teens up for failure if we act as if we don’t care and don’t pay attention to their making healthy and appropriate decisions.

5 bad habits parents should watch out for in their teenagers:

1. Drinking Alcohol:

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2019 youth risk behaviour survey, 29% of high school students have consumed alcohol in the past 30 days. 5% acknowledged driving while drunk, while 17% admitted to travelling with a drunk driver.
Your teen’s chance of death or injury in a vehicle accident or other mishap is increased by alcohol, and it may permanently affect her still-developing brain.

At this age, there is no such thing as a truly safe amount. Parents should watch out for signs of drunkenness from their lads and put an end to teen drinking.

2. Drug abuse:

Teenage culture is based on a desire to take risks and try new things.
They’re known for inventing new ways to experiment with opioids, and they almost never come from a sketchy corner dealer. Most likely, they came from your medicine cabinet.

Keep note of any other medications you’re taking, especially opioids like cough syrup and OxyContin, and discard any unused prescriptions. Also, discuss with your child the potential of using other natural study aids to increase memory, such as chewing gum while studying.
Some students are under such intense pressure to perform well in school that it appears to be an essential study help.

3. Vaping:

I’m ready for this craze to come to an end. Kids who smoke believe vaping is a good alternative, and teens who have never smoked begin vaping because they believe it is harmless. The truth is that 30.7% of e-cigarette users start smoking within 6 months of starting to vape, and the vapours contain cancer-causing toxins.

4. Caffeine Addiction:

Today’s teens are consuming more intense energy drinks and strong coffee to fuel their bodies and minds. While these legal beverages may appear to be less worrying, high caffeine levels can cause health issues and hide your child’s need for actual meals and sleep.

Furthermore, it is extremely dangerous for teenagers to mix energy drinks and alcohol. While a cup of coffee per day is unlikely to harm your children, keep track of how much they consume.

5. Secrets and Lies:

Teenagers have a natural desire for independence and privacy, but you can’t be a good parent if you don’t know what’s going on in their lives.

  • Allow yourself to simply catch up with your teen.
  • Ask open-ended questions while you’re there.
  • Maintaining an open channel of communication with your adolescent can mean the difference between spotting a major issue before it becomes too late or completely missing it.
  • If you feel your child is trying to hide something from you, be concerned, and get to work figuring out what it is.
