The human body is peculiar, made up of millions of cells, tissues and organs that help you perform day to day tasks to maximum effect.

But the human body can also be weird, as humans there are certain attributes that our body exhibits that even shock the most learned of us, we ask ourselves: is this normal? 

So we look at some facts about the human body you didn’t know before now.

  1. Our bones are stronger than steel:

Most of us would have at some point experienced a broken bone in life, the fact is that bone is a tough substance. 

It’s so strong, that a Discover Magazine states that, “ounce for ounce, our bones are stronger than steel.”

A bone possesses a greater pressure tolerance and bearing strength than even a rod of steel of the same width. 

The strongest bone in our body is the femur, and it can support 30 times the weight of an average human.

2. Bacteria is the reason your armpit stink:

Your body possesses two kinds of sweat glands. Most of it that is on your arms and legs secrete a mix of water and salt. 

But the glands in your armpits (as well as your groin area) release an oily substance, which bacteria like to groom in, bacterias feel so comfy here that it allows them to multiply at speedy rates.

So, when next your armpit or groin stink, just know it’s actually the bacteria feeding on the oil that releases the telltale stench.

 

3. Hold your breath to stop the hiccups: 

It’s common knowledge that hiccups can be very unpleasant and uncomfortable for anyone suffering from it. Hiccups happen when your diaphragm is experiencing spasms (a sudden burst of energy).

But it can easily be stopped, if you build up carbon dioxide in your body (by not exhaling or holding your breath), it will stop your diaphragm from spasming, which is what causes the hiccups. 

 

4. Women handle the chills better than men: 

The female gender possesses a higher percentage of body fat and conserves more heat around the core. That in turn makes sure that vital organs are kept nice and toasty but not the extremities-like your hands and legs. 

Plus, research suggests that women have a higher resistance to cold than men. 

When exposed to the same cold temperature, blood vessels in women’s fingers constrict more than that of men’s, which is why they turn white more quickly.

5. 50% of your hand strength is in your pinkie finger: 

The pinkie finger had been underestimated and its functions downplayed to just making promises or a bet. But most of the strength your hands possess lies in the pinkie.

  • It helping the thumb to pinch and
  • It gives more power to the ring, middle, and index fingers. 

Laurie Rogers, a hand therapist at National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, tells The New York Times what losing your pinkie would mean, 

You’d lose 50 percent of your hand strength, easily.”
