5 HEALTH PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH SNORING

Snoring is the hoarse or harsh sound that occurs when air flows past relaxed tissues in your throat, causing the tissues to vibrate as you breathe. Nearly everyone snores now and then, but for some people, it can be a chronic problem.

Sometimes it may also indicate a serious health condition. In addition, snoring can be a nuisance to your partner. There are numerous “stop snoring” products on the market, and not all of them work as advertised.

Snoring might be something that should be discussed with a doctor since it can involve the following health risks.

1. HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

You may wonder what in the world snoring has to do with high blood pressure, but in some cases, snoring can actually be disruptive to the sleep of the person snoring and keeping them from getting the rest they need. A constant lack of restorative sleep can have an effect on the body in many ways, one of them being higher blood pressure.

2. STROKE

People who snore are far more likely to suffer a stroke. Sometimes snoring is an indication of a more serious sleep-related problem such as sleep apnea, which elevates the risk of stroke even further.

3. HEART DISEASE

“We know that sleep apnea is linked to cardiovascular problems, such as high blood pressure and coronary artery disease, eventually leading to possible heart attacks,”  In fact, data suggest that people with sleep apnea are twice as likely to have both nonfatal heart disease events and fatal heart attacks. Treatment for this sleep disorder is effective: Clinical studies have also shown that treating sleep apnea with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) reduces your heart disease risk to that of people without sleep apnea.

4. CARDIAC ARRHYTHMIA

Snoring can cause a lack of oxygen that the body needs to maintain the proper functioning of major organs like the heart. An arrhythmia is a disruption in the normal rhythm of the heart, which can cause it to beat erratically. In many cases, an arrhythmia is not a significant risk to life, but in other cases, it can lead to permanent damage that can make life-threatening complications much more likely.

5. INJURY

This is one of the more serious dangers of sleep deprivation caused by snoring or sleep apnea. Daytime sleepiness can be so intense that it puts you and the people around you at risk. If snoring or sleep apnea is leaving you exhausted, you run the risk of falling asleep, perhaps while driving. An analysis of health information and driving data for 618 adults over 10 years showed that the sleepier people felt during the day, the greater their risk for a car accident. The risk was also greater if people were driving alone.
