9 Things to Consider when buying a family Car

Putting your family into careful consideration when buying a car is highly crucial, most especially When you’re upgrading your family (by number) you may also need to upgrade your family car to suit family size and purpose. Not all cars are good for family trip. Remember you will want to keep some backpack in the boot, carry some cooler with and consider some other loads we may not note here. All these, when considered, will give you that good comfort when you’re out with your family.

Here is a checklist of the things to note when you need to get a family car.
9 Things to Consider when buying a family Car

1. Infant seat consideration

You won’t want to forget this important question. Inspecting first if the car has enough space to accommodate your kids cannot be overemphasised. Is there enough room for child car seats?

If you have (or plan to have) three kids under 7 years old you’ll need to fit three car seats or booster seats in the back. Will your new car be wide enough? In this case a Sienna, 2017 Honda CR-V, 2017 Toyota Highlander or 2017 Chevrolet Tahoe

Also, consider the length of your car. If you fit a capsule or rear-facing seat in the back, will you have to pull your front seat so far forward that there is no legroom? This is one to think when you have a family member that is tall.

2. Where are the car seat anchor points?

Sedans often would have its anchor point behind the backseat but vans, hatchbacks and 4WDs can vary in anchor seat position (some are on the car’s ceiling, which can obstruct your view). What you don’t want though, are anchor points in the boot as the strap will reduce the amount of storage space you need.

3. Will all your things fit?

You have to picture all that usually will go in your car and check to see if it will fit into the new car. It will be better if you will be allowed to check it in and if not, just get a family size much larger than the previous car you had. When you have more than two kids, then there is the tendency that you will need to consider space for your stuff before making that final payment for the car. Shopping and groceries are still there, don’t forget these too.

4. Is the backseat easy to access?

The fact that you’ve got a large family means you shouldn’t consider anything that isn’t four doors. There will be a lot of movement and crossing off. Getting a baby out of a car seat can be tedious, you wouldn’t want to ‘dig’ it.
Also, consider the height of the car. Will your back survive years of bending down to get the kids out?

5. Is everyone comfortable?
Comfortability is necessary when considering a car for your family size. You wouldn’t want to stress your family in a car without a properly working Air conditioning system. For your family’s comfort, check out the Air conditioning vent and run a test to confirm if the back is well ventilated.

6. Is this a safe car?
Check all necessary car safety kit, safety measures and the likes. Take note of the car’s ANCAP’s Safety Rating. This rates car according to the level of safety in an accident. ANCAP recommend you steer clear of any car with less than a four-star rating and that you look at built-in safety features such as airbags, antilock braking systems (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC) and set belt pre-tensioners.

7. How fuel-efficient is the new car?

There is no point in spending lot of money on a lovely car if it is too expensive to fill it with fuel! You can now check fuel-efficiency as all new light vehicles to display a fuel-consumption rating.

8. Does the car have extra features?

Finding an extra feature might just be what will interest you the most. There are some extra features that you can look out for when you are buying your new car.

Additional safety features that might be worth considering are, child locks on the doors, rear seat belt warning devices and reversing cameras, so you can see exactly what is happening behind you when you reverse the car.

Why not check out other luxury inclusions. It could be leather seats (much easier to clean than fabric), cup holders, built-in DVD players USB ports and other rear-seat entertainment options (individual audio jacks, 12V power outlets) etc.

9. Does the car suit you?
No matter how clean the car is, no matter how fine it may be to your thirst the question is does it suit your desire?
Don’t forget that even though you have a family you are still you! And your car should be something that you will enjoy driving and be proud to own. So don’t hesitate to check its suitability.

After all said and done, think of a trip or a picnic. Probably a trip to Obudu cattle ranch, Ikogosi waterfall or a trip to Lekki Conservation Centre. You will be glad you went for this car
