HOW TO PREVENT ROAD ACCIDENT

A road accident as defined by Wikipedia means a traffic collision, also called a motor vehicle collision (MVC) among other terms, occurs when a vehicle collides with another vehicle, pedestrian, animal, road debris, or other stationary obstruction, such as a tree or pole. Traffic collisions often result in injury, death, and property damage.

Road injuries occurred in about 54 million people in 2013. This resulted in 1.4 million deaths in 2013, up from 1.1 million deaths in 1990. The death rate in Africa is the highest (24.1 per 100,000 inhabitants), the lowest rate is to be found in Europe (10.3 per 100,000 inhabitants)

This damages and loss of lives can be avoided if we adhere to the instructions below:

1. Kill your speed:

Over speeding is one of the major causes of accidents on the roads because while difficult to be controlled in the event of any obstruction. That is why some vehicle tumbles or resort to head-on- collision. Since you are not into Formula one or any other car racing, reduce your speed, life has no duplicate.

2. Obey traffic rules:

Road signs and traffic rules are not adverts which you may choose to ignore but they are life preservative rules which must be obeyed whenever we are driving. Failure to obey traffic rules may lead to disability, loss of vehicle, valuables and lives.

3. Wear seat belt:

The use of seatbelt while driving is not optional if safety is your aim whenever you are in a vehicle. Wearing of seatbelt is one of the first set of safety measure in the vehicle. The seatbelt will help you to have firm grip on the vehicle in case of danger.

Seatbelt will prevent you from hitting your head and body against the windshield in the event of an accident. Several lives have been lost during accidents for not wearing seat belts.

4. Vehicle must be in good condition:

Putting a vehicle that is not in good condition on the road is a very big risk to the vehicle owner and other road users. Before you hit the road, check the state of your vehicle to ascertain the functionality of your break, wiper, coolant. Check your radiator water, break oil, gear oil, jack, tyres including the extra-tyre. If you notice any malfunctions or strange sounds, get an expert to fix it before you make use of the car. Any fault neglected may lead to a regrettable adventure.

5. Road must be in good condition:

To have an accident free roads, the road must be in good condition. Bad roads are the bane behind many accidents. For us to have good roads, road construction companies do quality jobs when constructing roads while road maintenance agency must be up and doing.

6. Avoid drugs and alcohol when driving:

Alcohol and drug induce the drivers to make unpardonable errors. It affects their thinking, sight and actions because some of this drugs may cause drowsiness. Please, avoid drugs and alcohol, it will land you into accident that you may not live to tell the story.

7. Don’t drive when you are stressed up:

Safe driving connotes right frame of mind and body.It is dangerous to drive when you are tired or stressed up. A tired person can easily make costly mistakes that may lead to fatal accidents. When you are stressed, don’t drive, have quality rest.

8. Consider other road users and be road-friendly:

Accident can be avoided if all vehicle owners and drivers consider other road users. Such mindset will help us avoid carefree attitude of parking faulty vehicles in the middle of the road without putting a C-caution sign. Don’t overtake in a bend or on a hill. This has caused a lot of accident on the highway. Always consider other road users before you do anything on the road.

9. Apply common sense speed limit where necessary:

Ensure that you follow the speed limit at every part of the road.This is warning signs that are aimed at preventing dangers. Note that, they’re placed to slow down and there are places to speed. Always observe the speed limit at all times.

10. Do away with your mobile devices when driving:

Lots of accidents have occurred due to the usage of mobile phones while driving. Using a phone while driving is totally wrong as it will deprive you of the concentrations needed for safe driving.

11. Avoid Overconfidence:

Larger numbers of drivers who had been involved in auto crash became a victim due to overconfidence. Overconfidence normally makes the driver throws caution to the wind believing that he is a master of the game of driving. Regardless of your years of driving, avoid overconfidence and drive with care.

12. Pay Attention to Signs on the dashboard:

Many auto crash would have been avoided if drivers have paid attention to the warning signs on the dashboard.

Every light on the dashboard is not a decoration but for electrical and mechanical information about the vehicle which must be noted and acted upon.Neglecting it can lead to danger.

13. Avoid distractions:

To avoid accidents, avoid all form of distractions. Distraction can come from a discussion with friends, family, children, video clips, music and happenings by the roadsides. Driving requires concentration. A little distraction can cause fatal accident

14. Get a good headlamp:

Many auto crash early in the morning and night were as a result of blur headlamps. You will need to see clearly to drive perfectly. To see the state of the road and other road users, you need a very sharp headlamp. This is not negotiable.

15. Sleep Well:

If you have experience sleep deprivations as a result of night  If you have experience sleep deprivations as a result of night duties, parties or vigil, don’t drive until you sleep very well. Don’t rely on your skills to break this rule because driving requires alertness to road signs and behavior of other road users.
