Osinbajo Visits Borno To Flag Off The Food Distribution To IDPs
The acting President, Yemi Osinbajo has arrived Borno to flag off the distribution of food to the IDPs. This programme is the initiative of the Federal Government which aims to distribute food to the 1.8 million persons that were affected by the insurgency in the Northeast.
The first phase of the food distribution is 30,000 tonnes comprising Maize, Sorghum, and Soyabeans. The foods are grown locally by Nigerian farmers and purchased from Nigerian companies.
The Presidency said: “The distribution will be carried out on behalf of the Federal Government by officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in partnership with State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) and International Humanitarian Agencies. NEMA has assured that it is taking all the measures necessary to ensure transparent and equitable distribution of the grain, the total amount of food to be distributed in the first phase being flagged off by Acting President Osinbajo on June 8, 2017 is 30,000 metric tonnes — comprising Maize, Sorghum and Soyabeans, grown locally by Nigerian farmers and purchased from Nigerian companies.”
The grain will be purchased from local farmers from Ibadan, Kano, Kaduna, Gombe and shall be conveyed mainly by road to the IDPs in camps and host communities in Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Bauchi and Gombe.
In order to guarantee transparency and orderliness, the Programme will use a voucher-based system to distribute the food to door-to-door instead of the beneficiaries queuing. This voucher system will also ensure that food gets to the beneficiaries and that all those who receive food will be accounted for.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA): “Each household beneficiary would be issued with a voucher, which will be redeemed at the receipt of the household allocation of the food basket.”
