Parent wants baby registered with unknown gender

A Canadian parent is demanding that their new baby should be the world’s first child to be registered as “gender unknown” on its birth certificate.

Kori Doty, the parent of the baby who is identified as a “non-binary trans person”, is insisting that Canadian authorities issue a non-gendered birth certificate for their 8-month-old child. Doty has a moustache and claims to be neither male nor female.

Doty who prefers to be addressed as they want the same for baby Searyl Atli; who was born last November. They added: “I’m recognising them as a baby and trying to give them all the love and support to be a whole person that they can be outside of the restrictions that come with the boy box and the girl box.”

Doty has tried to get the British Columbia to issue baby Saeryl a birth certificate with no gender speculations, the authorities have refused to grant it. The baby, however, has health cards given with the gender specification as “undetermined”

The parent explained: “When I was born, doctors looked at my genitals and made assumptions about who I would be, and those assignments followed me and followed my identification throughout my life. Those assumptions were incorrect, and I ended up having to do a lot of adjustments since then.”

The British Columbia Rights Tribunal has been fighting on behalf of Doty to get government documents to accommodate non-gendered people but it has been difficult as British Columbia only issues birth documents which have a male or female designation.
