Senator Shehu Sani speaks on hate Speeches sanction

Following President Muhammadu Buhari’s reaction to several hate speeches flying around in the country when he returned from London and in regards to the plans of Nigeria military to start monitoring hate speeches and comments of Nigerians Senator Shehu Sani, on Tuesday, had condemned the plan.

While speaking during his visit to the National  Human Rights Commission, (NHRC) Sani stated it is clear that people in a position of power are still finding it difficult to realize that Nigeria is a democracy which allows the right to freedom of expression.

The lawmaker who however did not support the idea of churning out hate speech in the country maintained that “the Military or the Police have no business in monitoring and arresting people for posting information on the social media.”

Sani described that the plan as undemocratic. Further stating in clear terms, Sani said there is need more than ever before to have a template on what constitutes a hate speech in order for the security agencies and Nigerians to take note.

Speaking on the challenges facing the Commission, the parliamentarian promised to assist the Commission (NHRC) in realizing its mandate saying, “We do receive reports that you are overwhelmed by complaints.

“You are doing a fantastic job, for standing up for corporate and government interest, as a human rights activist and now a Senator, I will offer myself to do everything to see that your budgetary requirements are fully met,” the senator added.

The Acting Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mrs Oti Ovrawah in response expressed her appreciation that Senator Sani has stepped in to assist in taking the Commission to greater heights as far as promoting; protecting and enforcing the rights of Nigerians are concerned.

She stated the Commission issued an advisory preparatory to the 2015 general election to curb cases of hate speech and since then, it has been working to see that the various cases of hate speech and electoral violence are addressed.

Ovrawah also told the Senator that some staff of the Commission are training the police on the principles human rights and also monitoring the human rights situation of the IDPs camps especially that of the North East.
