Shocking: Father of 10 commits suicide in Kano

A 45-year-old father, Balarabe Haruna of Hausawa Sabon Titi quarters, Kano Municipal has committed suicide by jumping into a well.

The middle aged man who was a petty trader was said to have excused his 10 children and his wife from their home before he allegedly plunged into the well located at the centre of his compound.

It was learnt that Balarabe Haruna was last week diagnosed with malaria and treated in his home accordingly. He was said to be recuperating before the tragic incident.

Family sources confided that the late Haruna had no trace of any mental illness before committing suicide and that the entire family members who heard of the horrible incident are still in shock.

However, the eldest son of the family of the deceased, Balarabe Mahmud, disclosed that the incident occurred at about 2.00pm in the afternoon on Saturday, last weekend when the entire family members were temporarily asked to vacate the compound by his late father to enable him to have some rest.

Mahmud disclosed: “we all left the home in strict compliance with his directives to allow my ailing father have complete rest only to return home and in shock when we discovered he was missing.

The eldest son Haruna also said “we immediately raised an alarm and launched a search team only for us to notice strange movements in the well. A few minutes afterwards as we promptly invited men of the Fire Service Department to the rescue immediately.

”Consequently, the fire service operation which lasted a few hours led to the recovery of his father’s corpse from the well amid tears within the family.

Confirming the incident by the Director Fire Service in Kano, Mohammad Rilwan, disclosed that they got to the scene at about 3 pm on Saturday afternoon after his men received an emergency call last weekend.

The Director Fire Service stated that the victim was rescued dead and delivered to the family after a formal request from the family members for proper burial rites.

Also contacted was the Police Public Relations Officer, Kano Command, DSP Magaji Musa Majia, said the incident has not been reported officially to the police yet. he stated.
