Super eagles plays 1-1 draw as Ahmed Musa resigns captaincy

The Super Eagles and Teranga Lions of Senegal played out a 1-1 draw in the international friendly between both sides on Thursday in London.

Kelechi Iheanacho for the umpteenth time was the hero for Nigeria getting the equalizer for the Super Eagles from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute.

Moussa Sow had put the Senegal team in front in the 54th minute before Iheanacho’s late equaliser.

There was, however, a sour point in Thursday’s game as captain of the night, Ogenyi Onazi, got injured in the first half and was stretched out.
Elderson Echiejile was handed the captain’s arm band after Onazi’s forced exit.

Meanwhile, Ahmed Musa has announced that he is stepping down as Nigeria’s Super Eagles’ assistant captain.

The Leicester forward addressed the squad immediately after the team meeting to announce his decision, saying he wanted to focus on his game.

“He officially told the team that he is stepping down as assistant captain so that he can focus on playing because the responsibility appears to be affecting his game both at national team and at club level,” a team source hinted.

Musa, who is the first of two deputy captains along with Ogenyi Onazi, has been overlooked by Gernot Rohr, who told the forward that Onazi will captain the team against Senegal, while left-back Elderson Echiejile will lead them out against Burkina Faso.

According to a team source, Rohr took the decision because he wanted the team to be led out by “a player who plays regularly”.

But the move would have been humiliating to Musa, who was named substitute captain after Vincent Enyeama retired, but was then diplomatically deposed by Samson Siasia, who handed the armband to John Obi Mikel.
