A study by Scientists of the Nigeria Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) has revealed that in 18 states in Nigeria, mosquitoes are no more affected by insecticide nets. The report shows that Lagos, Ogun and Niger states are more affected by this.
The deputy director & head public health department, NIMR, Sam Awolola who led the research said that the states where the mosquito insecticide resistance was detected in Nigeria are: Jigawa, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Benue, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Anambra, Enugu, Rivers, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo states.
Awolola also said: “Most of the insecticide products used in malaria control is also being used in the agricultural sector in Nigeria. This over-saturation is a major source of resistance”.
The director-general of the Institute, Babatunde Salako, said the new discovery will hinder the progress that has been made in controlling malaria in the country. He advised that there is a need for an alternative to the use of insecticides. He mentioned that non-chemical controls can be used.
Mr. Salako said that scientists must be empowered to search out other alternatives to control mosquito so as to stop malaria.
