A 38-year-old Australian man has been charged to court on Friday for headbutting former Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbott in Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania.

Speaking to newsmen, victimized Abbott said a man shouted his name, wanting to shake hands with him but instead gave a headbutt when he got closer.

The man who Police said was wearing a “Yes” badge, in support of same-sex marriage head-butted Abbott when he was leaving a meeting at a local newspaper office on Thursday.

The Tasmania police said the 38-year-old North-Hobart man has been charged with “one count of common assault following a police investigation into a complaint made by Tony Abbott.”

According to reports gathered, the man has been granted bail and is expected to appear in court on October. 23,’’ police added.

Speaking about what he perceived as the cause of the incident, Tony Abbott told newsmen that he was left shocked and with a very slightly swollen lip.

He said a man had yelled out his name and asked to shake his hand, but instead, head-butted him.

At the moment, Australia is holding a legally non-binding postal survey seeking that 16 million voters should give their consent on whether to change the law to allow gay couples to marry.

The survey question reads, “Should the law be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry?”
