A US husband and wife based in Houston, Texas suburb has been sentenced to seven months in jail and seven months home confinement each after they were found guilty of holding a Nigerian woman (their maid and nanny) captive for two years, authorities revealed on Monday.

Information gathered from Reuters revealed that the victimized maid had been promised by the couple to receive wages on resuming the job in the US after she was lured into the plan from Lagos. However, they were unable to pay her wages and decided to hold her captive. They further threatened to harm her if she objected their confinement.

After the matter was tabled at the office of the Acting U.S Attorney, Abe Martinez, the couple, Sandra Nsobundu, 49 and Chudy Nsobundu, 57 were ordered to pay a restitution fee of $121,000 to the victim.

The Attorney office said in a statement that Sandra pleaded guilty to a forced labour documents charge and her husband Chudy, pleaded guilty to visa fraud in hearings that ended late on Friday.

Prior the time of her release, the victimized maid had been with the Nsobundu family in Katy, Texas for more than two years. While her movement was restricted, her international passport was also seized and the Nsobundus did not pay her, threatening to send her back to Nigeria if she objected.

Officials also revealed that her movement was restricted to two short walks each day around the house with the Nsobundu’s children and would frequently yell at her despite the restrictions.

Officials also revealed that the couple falsified her U.S visa application with lies to boost their chances of keeping her to work as an illegal housemaid and nanny.

Among the falsified information, the Nsobundu also painted her to be 20-years older than she was, falsely claiming also that she was part of their family.
