As reported by mirror.co.uk, a terminally ill cancer patient has married his long-term girlfriend in a whirlwind hospital ceremony organised in just three hours by kind-hearted nursing staff.

Mark Leigh, 44, decided to marry Janet Dawson at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester after doctors told him that he only had ‘days or weeks to live’. Undying Love: Cancer Patient Who Have Few Days To live Get Married To His Lover In Hospital

The romantic ceremony was organised thanks to the kindness and generosity of nurses, physios, doctors and ward staff.

They arranged for a registrar to perform the service, provided decorations, a buffet and a photographer, and enlisted support from Tesco who donated the cakes.

Mark’s mum, Ruth Leigh, said the hospital staff were ‘truly amazing’ and that their family ‘can’t thank them enough’.

She told the Manchester EveningA News: “We were told that Mark is terminally ill. It happened very, very quickly. He was only diagnosed about two weeks ago.

“On Thursday the doctor told us that if he wants to get married then it would need to be sooner rather than later.

“The next day the hospital planned it all for them in just three hours and presumably all out of their own pockets.

“The staff were all truly amazing and pulled out all the stops. They have made wonderful memories for all of us and we can’t thank them enough.” Undying Love: Cancer Patient Who Have Few Days To live Get Married To His Lover In Hospital

The ceremony was held in a specially decorated ‘day room’ at the hospital and was attended by close family members, including Mark’s parents Ruth and Dennis, his brother, Simon Leigh and his partner Christie Rustage, and his nephew Ashley Kennedy.

Ruth said it was a ‘wonderful day tinged with sadness’.

She said: “They dressed one of the day rooms up for them to get married in so he wouldn’t have to be in his bed.

“He couldn’t walk but managed to stand up with a zimmer frame which they had specially decorated for him.

“Janet didn’t have a wedding dress. She ran home for a wash and put on a normal dress and Mark was wearing a shirt.

“They always said that one day they would get married but that it would be very low key. They would just go away and get married and come back. They are both very quiet and private people.

“The hospital has done so much for him to make it such a memorable occasion.”

Warehouse company worker Mark, from Wythenshawe in south Manchester, was previously diagnosed with cancer 23 years ago and given the all-clear.

However last month he went into hospital for a CT scan after feeling ill and quickly ended up in intensive care, on life support and in an induced coma.

He then received the ‘definitive diagnosis that he was terminally ill and didn’t have very long to live’.

Ruth added: “In the last two weeks our lives have changed forever.

“He got over the last cancer 23 years ago but has now been diagnosed with a different cancer and they don’t know the primary cause.

“While he has been in hospital he has also suffered from kidney failure and wasn’t expected to survive that.

“I don’t think they expected him to make it to this weekend but he’s okay at the moment.”
