Lagos State Police Command has arrested the Father of Chidinma Ojukwu, who allegedly stabbed Super TV CEO Usifo Ataga to death.

A senior law enforcement source, who declared himself anonymous because he was not authorized to speak on the matter, told PUNCH Metro that the suspect and his father were arrested at his residence, No. 57 Akinwunmi Street, Alagomeji, Yaba, Wednesday.

The source said the father was arrested for resisting Chidinma’s arrest and for becoming violent towards the police, who went to apprehend her.

The source added that the man did not believe his daughter committed any crime until she confessed on Thursday, adding that he was being held at the State Intelligence and Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba.

“She (Chidinma) stays with her dad. His mom and dad don’t live together. Her father was arrested Wednesday because he resisted the arrest of his daughter. He never believed his daughter committed any crime until Thursday. He is in Panti as we speak, but he was not paraded today (Thursday), ”said the source.

Chidinma, who claimed to be a 300-level student in the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos, confessed to stabbing Ataga to death while marching past the state police command headquarters, Ikeja.

A professor from the department, who spoke to one of our correspondents on condition of anonymity, said: “I know her (Chidinma) for her beauty and innocent appearance. She is introverted to the core.

“Abandoned for her striking beauty, no one will likely notice her, because she doesn’t speak in class.”

“Yes, in our group talks, where there are several professors, it was confirmed that she is a part-time Mass Communication student at level 300, UNILAG,” said the speaker.

One of the classmates, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “Yes, she (Chidinma) is a part-time 300-level mass communication student. I know her, but we are not talking; she doesn’t interact with many people. She is a recluse.

“She is a great girl, who comes to give lectures and leaves later; she has few friends she talks to. I really don’t know much about her. “

Another student said that he had not seen her in the current semester, adding that his lectures could not be held on Thursday because the professors did not show up.

“I haven’t seen her this semester since we resumed on May 10th. We were supposed to have lectures today, but the speakers did not come. Likewise, your problem has been an important issue on our WhatsApp platform; It was a chaotic debate as the members took sides, ”he said.

The students said that they generally receive lectures between 5:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

UNILAG spokesperson Nonye Oguama declined to confirm whether Chidinma was indeed a student at the institution.

When contacted by PUNCH Metro after the parade, Oguama said she would not respond and criticized the media for publishing Chidinma’s claim to be a student at the institution.

“You didn’t contact me before. You are doing it now after you have posted it on your website. We have no comment, ”she replied angrily.

When questioned that the parade was a live broadcast, the UNILAG spokesperson stood firm and insisted that the name of the institution should not have been mentioned.

During her parade, Chidinma confessed to withdrawing N380,000 from the deceased’s account to pay her school fees.

State Police Commissioner Hakeem Odumosu had previously said that the 21-year-old student was tracked for 48 hours and was arrested at her parent’s residence in the Yaba area of the state on Wednesday.

He claimed that casual workers cleaning the building, where the incident occurred, discovered Ataga’s remains in the service department.

Odumosu said: “The victim, one Usifo Michael Ataga, went on to operate a media house. The lady, Chidinma Ojukwu, 21, a 300-level mass communication student at the University of Lagos, checked into the service apartment in Lekki with the man on a Sunday.

“They were there together as friends, but on Tuesday she left and left the man inside. So when the man didn’t come out on Tuesday and Wednesday, those who were evacuating the trash cans came in to do their usual duty and found that the apartment door was ajar.

“When they entered, Ataga found himself on the ground in a pool of blood. He was wearing only his pair of boxers. So, we started our investigation and were able to track down the main suspect and have her arrested. She has confessed to the crime.

“She said the drugs and alcohol they both took drugged them and they were trying to have fun, but she resisted and the man insisted on getting his way and that led to the fight. He picked up the kitchen knife and stabbed the man twice in the neck and once in the stomach. After his death, she took his belongings and fled. “

Chidinma said that Ataga turned violent after she refused his request for more sex, adding that she stabbed him under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

She said: “I checked the place we stayed online on Sunday and sent him the details and he paid. On Monday we were drinking and smoking together, we had fun and I went looking for food. On Tuesday, he was trying to make advances to me, but I was tired and he got violent and forced his way and I gave in.

“In the afternoon, we smoked and ate. We got high and he wasn’t happy with the first round of sex; so I was just smoking, drinking, and eating my food when he came to me while watching a movie.

“I told him that I was not happy with what he did the first time. I told him that he was not helping me with anything, but that he was playing with me. He told me to take his ATM card and withdraw whatever amount I wanted and gave me the PIN, but I told him that was not what he meant.

“Then, he became violent; I was defending myself and at some point, I hit my head against the wall and I retaliated. I was choking and I was in the kitchen cupboard, so I reached over and grabbed a knife and stabbed him twice in the neck and once in the stomach. “

When Ataga weakened, Chidinma said she fled the apartment and withdrew money from her account to cover her school expenses.

She said: “We smoke SK and Loud. As he lay there, I changed my clothes, found the key where I kept it, and left the room. When I left, I didn’t go near anyone. I didn’t feel good about what I did.

“I withdrew N380,000 and not N5m from your account. I feel a lot of remorse. I wanted to use the money I withdrew to pay my school fees. I was disappointed when the police arrested me at my parents’ home and it was when they arrested me around 10 pm that my parents found out about the incident.

“I live with my parents; I left home on Sunday and told them that I was going to look for a job as an usher. I used the foreign number that I generated when sending a text message to the owner of the apartment.”

Exhibits recovered from Chidinma include a driver’s license, courtesy cards, Access Bank statement, a Nigerian passport with the suspect’s number B50010434, a fake driver’s license with Mary Johnson with the suspect’s photograph, an identification card national with the suspect’s name, UBA ATM debit card with the suspect’s name and an identification card from the University of Lagos in his name.
