I want to be in a team with winning mentality- Alexis
Alexis Sanchez has dropped a strong hint that he wants Arsenal to improve or he could seek a transfer away.
With manager Arsene Wenger under pressure, the Emirates side are in danger of missing the Champions League next season as they lie sixth in the Premier League, six points short of fourth-placed Liverpool, albeit with two matches in hand.
Several players have admitted that their mentality has not been good enough this season, and that is something the Chile international also wishes to see improve before the opening of the summer transfer window.
His contract is up in 2018, so come June he will be in a strong position to force a move through if the club is not up to the standards he expects.
“I’d like to stay in the city, but for a team that is winning, that has a winning mentality,” he is quoted by El Grafico as having said.
“I am happy in London and I hope to finish my contract with Arsenal. Hopefully Arsenal can push to win the big titles.
“I’m 28, I still have a lot ahead of me. I am a player that takes great care of myself.”
Numerous clubs have been linked with the former Barcelona man, including Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, as he remains reportedly unsettled at the Emirates Stadium.
Chelsea, however, appear his most credible suitor at present, though. Manager Antonio Conte wishes to sign him to increase the scoring power in his team, but the South American still will come at a price – their north London rivals have put a £50 million price tag around his neck.
Alexis’ latest comments, regarding his happiness in London, add more weight to suggestions that the Chilean could hop across the city, particularly as there is little doubting their winning mentality and ability to compete at the highest level. It is a transfer that will look only more appealing should the Gunners fail to overhaul both Liverpool and Manchester United, who lie between them and the Champions League next term.
The Gunners, meanwhile, remain desperate to keep hold of arguably their greatest star – they have a good deal of credibility on the line and if he were to leave, it would be another major blow to Wenger, whose future continues to hang in the balance.
