War against flood: FG to stage campaign against indiscriminate dumping of waste
The federal government is set to stage campaign against indiscriminate
dumping of solid wastes across the nation.
The deputy director, Mr Uche Eguatu, Department of erosion, flood and
coastal management of the ministry disclosed this in an interview with
News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday.
Eguatu noted that the mandate of his department was to carry out
projects aimed at con-scientising the citizens on the dangers of
indiscriminate dumping of solid waste.
In his words, the deputy director said “it is our mandate to go ahead,
whether there are rains or not, to implement projects and programmes
that will stem the incidence of flood.
He stated that the ministry is prepared to tackle the menace of flood
militating against the nation.
“We appropriate budgetary provisions, we undertake civil works of
executive the channelization of waterways” he said.
Also, the deputy director noted that the ministry has come up with an
information dissemination system on potential floods tagged “Flood
Early Warning System” targeting the commissioners of environment of
the 36 states of the federation.
“We also disseminate information from the state ministries of
environment to the people at the grassroots; we do this by getting in
touch with the commissioners of the 36 states”.
He further said “we get in touch with them and we disseminate whatever
flood information we have to them; then, they go down to the
grassroots and alert the people”.
