Crisis in marriage is inevitable but money or how couples manage money in their marriage is one of the major causes of the crisis in marriage. You must have proper money management skills if you don’t want to lose your marriage to a financial crisis.
If finances are currently a source of stress in your marriage or if you and your spouse are simply looking for ways to be on the same financial page, here are nine strategies to help you out of it.
Get up and stay on the same team.
To win in life and finances, you must be on the same team with your spouse. When it comes to finances, you have to put aside the “my own, your own mentality” and work together as a team. You need to drop the “my money” & “his money” phrase and start using “our money.” To enjoy financial unity, come up with what works for you as a couple.
You must be able to answer certain questions about your individual vision and your shared vision for life. Like what are your hopes and dreams for your future — as individuals and as a couple?
Set financial goals together.
Once your vision for life is known, then you need to set financial goals together. Break your goals into manageable bits that are realistic and trackable. Have a specific time frame to achieve a result. Have something definite like “in the next two months we want to save #1 million.”
Don’t Spend Lavishly
Track the way you spend, don’t use you hard earned money to buy what you don’t need. Remember you are not impressing anybody because people are actually not impressed but your life is suppressed.
Consider where you want to be in a particular year
Visualize where you want to be financially in maybe 5 or 10 years then work in-line with your projection. This will help you to save accordingly.
Create a written budget that works.
It is important that you create a budget that works for both of you and if you want your budget to be successful, it will need to be one that you both agree on and can commit to.
Communicate openly and honestly.
Communication is very key to the success of any human relationship, so also it is when it comes to your finance. Communicate openly without hiding your fears so you can both tackle it.
Change your attitude.
When you change your attitude, you can change your life. This is true because your attitude affects every area of your life. Have a can-do attitude and be positively positioned to life when you are communicating. This will help you to achieve your set goals on time.
Learn to compromise.
The reality is you and your spouse are two different people, you will need to compromise in order to be successful. Don’t be rigid, follow what will work for the success of the family, not your selfish interest. Compromise here means finding a solution that works for both of you.
Use the saver/spender magic
It is better to know who the saver is and who spends. You need, to be frank here to help you achieve your goals quickly. Let the saver be in charge of the family finance and the person too should not be too rigid when it comes to spending for important things in the family.
Remember, to have a healthy marriage, money is key and the way you are able to manage it will go a long way.
