WC Qualifier: FIFA Reschedules South Africa vs Senegal match, bans Ghanaian referee for life

World football governing body FIFA, on Wednesday, has ordered that the World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Senegal match of last year be replayed after the referee was banned for “match manipulation”.

The match played on November 12, 2016, was said by the football governing body to be rescheduled for a date in November. The decision by the football governing body became a final judgement after Ghanaian referee Joseph Lamptey awarded Senegal a controversial penalty.

Lamptey was initially placed on a three-months suspension and eventually banned for life in March.

Speaking about the rescheduled match, Norman Arendse, Chairman of South Africa Football Association Legal Committee, said to BBC’s  Newsday programme:

“As I speak to you now SAFA cannot accept it because we have got absolutely no details of the alleged match manipulation, what the nature of it was, and what it all involved.

“Is he [the referee] just a corrupt individual, was he bribed by a third party outside of the match to influence the outcome of the match? We just don’t know.

“And that is the most unpalatable thing for us – to accept an outcome to which we should… have been a party, and we’ve never ever been called upon to put our side of the story in relation to the game.”

However, the news of the rescheduled match comes as a boost for Senegal, who are placed third, one point behind Cape Verde and Burkina Faso in African zone qualifying Group D, with two games to go.

Only the group winners secure a ticket to the 2018 finals in Russia.

In its final decision, FIFA explained that “the lifetime ban of the match referee, Joseph Lamptey, for match manipulation, was the ruling imposed by the FIFA Disciplinary and Appeal Committees”.

“The match will be replayed within the November 2017 international window, with the exact date to be confirmed in due course.
