ADHD is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and it is the most commonly diagnosed mental disorder in children. It can also affect teenagers and continue to adulthood.
Children suffering from this disorder could be hypersensitive and find it difficult to control their impulses. These behaviours affect their normal life, daily activities, and schooling.
ADHD is more common in boys than girls and it is discovered during early school years when a child finds it difficult to pay attention or concentrate on his or her studies.
Symptoms of ADHD can occur;
When a child is easily distracted
Doesn’t follow directions or finish tasks
Doesn’t appear to be listening
Doesn’t pay attention and makes careless mistakes
Forgets about daily activities
Doesn’t like to do things that require sitting still
Often loses things
Tends to daydream
Has trouble playing quietly
Is always moving, such as running or climbing on things
Talks excessively
Is always “on the go” as if “driven by a motor”
Has trouble waiting for his or her turn
Blurts out answers
Interrupts others
Lack of focus
Causes of ADHD
Despite how common ADHD is, Doctors and researchers have not really been able to come up with a specific cause. They said it could be genetic or of neurological origin. Presence of toxins such as lead which may affect children’s brain development or poor nutrition can also be a possible culprit.
Management of ADHD
If at any point you discover that your ward(s) might be suffering from ADHD due to any symptom you notice, contact a health practitioner who could use therapy, medication or even both to detect.
As the parent, you can also help them at home by
1. Giving them healthy meal that contains balanced diet
2. Limit their time with television
3. Limit use of Phones but let them do more of reading books
4. Let them get quality daily sleep
