A woman who is a rights activist for women was jailed for going against the driving ban placed on women by the government of Saudi Arabia.

According to Daily Mail, Manal Al-Sharif was Imprisoned for nine days in 2011 on the charge that she drove a car as a woman when she uploaded on YouTube a video showing her driving despite the law in the country that states that women must not drive.

“I was jailed because I challenged the ban. “I lost custody of my son, my job and my home (marriage), but I just have to accept the consequences; otherwise, women don’t move forward”.

Her video, however, caught the attention of about 700,000 viewers. She said in Saudi Arabia despite that you own a driving license as a woman you still need the guardian of a man for permission to do anything as women are seen legally as minors.

She explained that for her second marriage she wasn’t granted permission by the government because she was not marrying a Saudi citizen but they had to marry in a court in Canada.

Ms. Al-Sharif recently published her memoir titled “Daring To Drive”
