A 101-year-old woman has been arrested by Nigeria's National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)for allegedly selling cannabis in Ilisan, Ogun State, in a case that has drawn attention less for its scale than for the age of the suspect.
Esther Ogunmabo was apprehended on Saturday, August 15, 2026, and found with 90 grammes of skunk, a form of cannabis, packaged into small quantities apparently meant for sale.
According to NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi, Ogunmabo told officials she turned to selling the drug after a fire destroyed her provisions store, and that she had been distributing it to people in her community.
"She said one of her daughters, who resides in Lagos, arranges the supply of the substance to her every four days, which she in turn sold in bits," Babafemi said.
That daughter, allegedly the source of the supply, has since been arrested as well, the agency disclosed.
Given Ogunmabo's age, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.) directed that she be granted bail and referred for counselling rather than face the standard course of prosecution.
