On Thursday morning, Thomas Frimpong’s last words to his son Javits were a reminder to get to school on time. Javits, 15, never made it there.

“My son was precious, very clever,” the grieving father said.
Frimpong brought Javits from Ghana to New York a year ago in search of a better life. He said his son mostly kept to himself and rarely spent time outside the house.
Frimpong believes the killing may be linked to bullying. He said the school principal told him three days earlier that two students had been bullying his son and had been suspended for a week.
He added that school officials told him Javits was not the aggressor in a recent altercation. “The principal told me Javits is innocent. Javits is innocent. He was defending himself,” he said.
Near Crotona Park, authorities say Javits was shot in the stomach at about 9:30 a.m. He reportedly ran about a block before collapsing. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Surveillance footage showed a suspect fleeing the scene in a black hoodie, black sweatpants and a face mask. Police said three teenagers wearing black sweatsuits and blue surgical masks fled the area. They are being sought in connection with the killing.
