Police in Ondo State, southwestern Nigeria, have arrested a man accused of inflicting severe burns on his 10-year-old daughter's gen!tals using a hot pressing iron, in what authorities say was punishment for the child wetting her bed.

The suspect, identified as Amos Paul, a resident of Unaun, Upenme in Owo Local Government Area, was taken into custody after the incident was reported to police on Thursday, July 16, 2026.
In a statement, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, SP Abayomi Jimoh, said: ‘The Ondo State Police Command has arrested one Amos Paul, a resident of Unaun, Upenme, Owo Local Government Area, for allegedly inflicting grievous bodily harm on his 10-year-old daughter.’
According to the statement, ‘The incident, which was reported to the Police on Thursday, 16th July, 2026, revealed that the suspect allegedly used a hot pressing iron to burn the private part of his daughter, as punishment for bed-wetting.’
The young girl suffered serious injuries as a result.
‘The victim sustained severe injuries and was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, where she is currently receiving medical treatment,’ the statement said.
Police say officers acted quickly once the report came in.
‘Upon receipt of the information, detectives from 'A' Division, Owo, swiftly mobilised to the scene, arrested the suspect without delay and took him into custody,’ the statement noted.
The case has since been handed over for specialised handling.
‘The case is being transferred to the Gender Unit for discreet investigation and further necessary action in line with established procedures,’ Jimoh added.
The Commissioner of Police for Ondo State, CP Felix Ohagwu, has spoken out strongly against the alleged assault, calling it ‘cruel, inhumane and completely unacceptable.’
The statement said Ohagwu ‘reiterated the Command's unwavering commitment to protecting children and other vulnerable members of society from all forms of abuse, violence and exploitation.’
He also appealed to the public to come forward when they witness or suspect abuse: ‘The Commissioner urged members of the public to promptly report cases of child abuse, domestic violence and other related offences’ to the nearest police station.
Investigations into the case are ongoing.
