Lagos Resident Arrested Over Refuse Dumping as Authorities Warn Families

A resident of No. 13, Lanre Adefiranye Street, Baale Bus Stop, Meiran, Lagos State, has been arrested for allegedly dumping refuse into a drainage channel during rainfall, in the latest move by authorities to protect communities from worsening floods.

A joint enforcement team comprising the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Enforcement Team, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, popularly known as KAI, and mobile police officers attached to the team carried out the arrest after receiving a tip-off.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed the arrest in a post on his official X account on Wednesday, describing how the operation unfolded.

‘A joint enforcement operation involving the LAWMA Enforcement Team, LAGESC (KAI) and the Mobile Police attached to the team has led to the arrest of a resident of No. 13, Lanre Adefiranye Street, Baale Bus Stop, Meiran, Lagos,' Gbadegesin stated.

He explained further, ‘The arrest followed a tip-off received by the enforcement team alleging that the resident was dumping refuse into a drainage channel during today's rainfall.’

According to Gbadegesin, the suspect was apprehended at the location and has since been taken to the KAI headquarters for further prosecution.

Gbadegesin used the moment to renew his appeal to residents and families across Lagos.

‘Residents are once again strongly advised to desist from indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly into drainage channels, as such actions contribute directly to blocked drains and flooding,' he said.

This latest arrest comes amid intensified enforcement by the Lagos State Government and LAWMA against indiscriminate waste disposal across the state, an effort that has touched several families and businesses in recent months.

In July, PUNCH Online reported that 16 people were sentenced to four months' imprisonment each by the Oshodi Special Offences and Mobile Court for offences including indiscriminate waste disposal and dumping refuse at unauthorised locations, following LAWMA enforcement operations in parts of Lagos.

The crackdown has extended beyond individual residents to businesses and markets as well.

LAWMA has repeatedly warned residents against disposing of waste in drainage channels, particularly during the rainy season, noting that blocked drains can restrict the free flow of stormwater and increase the risk of flooding for families across the state.

The latest development forms part of the state's broader enforcement efforts to curb indiscriminate waste disposal and promote compliance with environmental regulations across Lagos.
