The Nigeria Democratic Congress has rejected circulating social media lists purporting to show its candidates for upcoming elections in Imo, Abia, and Anambra states, describing them as fake and warning that investigations are underway to identify those responsible.

The party's National Secretary, Ikenna Enekweizu, made the disavowal in a statement issued on Friday, urging members and the general public to disregard the lists entirely, stressing that they did not originate from the party's national headquarters.
According to Enekweizu, the NDC has already submitted its authentic candidate lists to the Independent National Electoral Commission through the proper channels prescribed by the Electoral Act, making the documents in circulation not only false, but potentially damaging to candidates whose names may or may not appear on them.
"The general public, especially members of the NDC in Imo, Abia, Anambra and other affected states, are hereby urged to disregard the lists of candidates widely circulating on social media as the authentic lists of our party's candidates from the aforementioned states. The said lists are fake and did not emanate from the party headquarters," the statement read.
Enekweizu did not mince words about who he believes is behind it.
He alleged that the documents were being spread by individuals with a deliberate agenda to destabilise the party.
"Such lists in circulation are being peddled by mischief makers and those who do not wish the party well. However, the party is investigating the sources of such fabrications and leakages as they are desperate attempts to cause ill will and distractions within the party," he said.
The NDC said investigations have commenced to trace the origin of the documents and establish how the information was circulated.
The party did not name any suspects or indicate whether security agencies had been involved in the inquiry.
