Ogun Police Arrest Suspect Over Gang-R@pe of 19-year-old

Police in Ogun State have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 19-year-old woman in the Oke Sopen area of Ijebu-Igbo, while a search continues for a second suspect said to be on the run.

The victim, whose identity has been withheld, told PUNCH Metro in a video interview that the attack happened on Sunday as she went to collect a key from someone in the area.

"On Sunday, I went to collect a key at a place. When I got there, I collected the key from the person. As I was leaving, two guys, Bolu and Ayo, dragged me inside and gang-raped me. I only know one of them whom I often greet but I don't know the second guy," she said.

Her mother reported the matter to police two days later.

The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Police Command, Opeyemi Oluborode, said in a statement on Thursday that operatives had since arrested one suspect.

At the same time, a manhunt was launched for the other.

"Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command attached to the Ijebu-Igbo Division have arrested a 20-year-old suspect in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 19-year-old female victim in the Oke Sopen area of Ijebu-Igbo, while an intensive manhunt has been launched to track down his fleeing accomplice," he said.

Oluborode said the case was formally reported at the station on the morning of September 1, describing the sequence of events that followed.

"The arrest follows a formal report lodged at the station on Tuesday, 1st September 2026, at about 10:10 a.m., by the victim's mother regarding an incident that occurred on 30th August 2026 at their residence in Odo Idi Scale, Oke Sopen, Ijebu-Igbo," he stated.

He added that officers moved quickly to preserve evidence and ensure the victim received proper medical attention.

"Upon receipt of the report, police operatives immediately swung into action, visiting and securing the scene of the crime to gather crucial evidentiary material. In line with standard procedures and survivor-centred care, investigating officers promptly escorted the victim to the General Hospital, supported by a formal Police Medical Form, for comprehensive medical examination and care," he said.

According to Oluborode, one of the two alleged attackers has since been identified and taken into custody.

"Following preliminary inquiries, operatives successfully tracked down and arrested one suspect, identified as Ayomide Kamula, aged 20," he said, adding that the search for the other suspect continues.

"The suspect is currently in police custody undergoing interrogation while robust operational measures and intelligence-led searches have been intensified to track down and apprehend the fleeing co-suspect, identified as Boye Balogun, 'm', who remains at large."

The matter has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation, Oluborode said.

The State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, said the command would not tolerate sexual and gender-based violence.

According to the statement, "The CP reiterated the Command's firm commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against sexual offences across the state."

It added, "He assured the victim's family and the general public that a thorough, discreet investigation is underway and that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring the fleeing suspect is brought to book to face the full weight of the law."
