A Nigerian woman, Ogechukwu Mary Eze, has recalled going ahead to take pre-wedding photos with her ex-husband ten days after he allegedly poured hot tea on her face, tore her clothes, and seized her phone because she could not find his bike key, which he had misplaced.
The mother of two shared her story in a Facebook post on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
Narrating the incident, which she said occurred on October 19, 2021, Eze wrote: ‘He poured me hot tea on my face because I couldn't find his bike key that he misplaced, tore my cloth on my body and seized my phone so I can't call anybody.’
She said she reported the matter to the police before her phone was returned.
‘I had to go to police and report the case before he returned my phone. I burnt his coat that he wears to church, I went to his shop and took 70k from his boy hoping to use as transport to take me back to my papa house.’
Eze said she fled to her cousin's house afterwards.
‘I ran to my cousin place and bought new clothes on my way.’
Ten days later, on October 29, 2021, the couple took pre-wedding photographs.
She said her husband instructed her to spend the remaining 70k on ashoebi materials and her traditional wedding attire as a form of punishment.
‘That's 10 days later we went to take this pre wedding pictures and that 70k I took was remaining 50k then. He punished me by asking me to use the money and buy ashebi clothes and the clothes I will wear on traditional marriage day; he didn't care if it was enough or not, that was my punishment.’
She said she had to ask her bridal party for contributions to cover the shortfall.
‘I had to task my 12 ashoebi girls to pay 3500 each for materials and added money from those that paid early to use as my transport to go to Lagos and buy the ashoebi clothes.’
Reflecting on the experience, she wrote: ‘Make una gather all the mad people in Lagos make Dem pour me their early morning spit. Being a Pick me is a curse.’
Eze said she recorded evidence of the incident at the time but was later persuaded to delete it.
‘I used our neighbor phone to video and snap myself with the tea on my face and body, but he convinced me to delete them after we settled.’
She said the tea stain remained on the wall of their home for two years, prompting frequent questions from visitors.
‘The mark of the tea was on the wall of the house for two years we lived there. Anytime a visitor comes they will always ask what stained the wall like that. I tried to clean it but it never came off. Each time I saw those marks for the time we lived there with always trigger a trauma in me which I have always bore quietly while being a good and virtuous wife until I couldn't take it anymore.’
She also disclosed that she suffered a miscarriage days before the incident.
‘Mind you, I had a miscarriage on Oct 1st 2021.’
Concluding her post, Eze said she has no regrets about leaving the marriage.
‘Life may not be so rosy now but honestly I am glad I left that marriage.’
