Two teenagers have drowned in a river at Askplaye community in Kaduna State following torrential rainfall that affected parts of the state.
The victims were identified as Suleiman Yakubu, 19, and Abubakar Mohammed, 17.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), North-West Operations Office, Kaduna, confirmed the incident, saying the bodies of the two victims were yet to be recovered.
In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, NEMA said its North-West Operations Office, in collaboration with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) and other stakeholders, had continued to assess the flood situation following torrential rainfall that lasted for approximately four consecutive days, from Thursday to Monday, across parts of Kaduna metropolis.
The agency said the Head of Operations, Hajia Halima Suleiman, led the assessment team to communities affected by the flood to ascertain the extent and impact of the floodwaters.
According to NEMA, some communities experienced flash floods which submerged roads and temporarily trapped residents in their homes, disrupting movement and forcing people to navigate affected areas with caution.
NEMA said Suleiman also visited the bereaved family of Yakubu to console them over the loss and offer support.
The agency said NEMA, KADSEMA and other emergency responders would continue to monitor the situation and assess the needs of affected communities to facilitate an appropriate response.
