Former Police Commissioner, now a legal practitioner, Samuel Ayodele Adetuyi said that the Special Anti-Robbery Squads (SARS) should be reorganised, retrain with modern technologies and not to be scrap.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Dailyfamily.ng the former commissioner of Police was of the opinion that SARS should not be scrapped and if they are scrapped who are they going to put there.

” I cannot speak for the police because I left the Nigeria Police Force 11years ago and the system was not like this during our days in the force.

“I enjoyed the system and I saw the goodness of the Police Force, we were properly knitted, properly trained and exposed properly.

“Now the right people are not coming into the force, some of the people joining the force now have their own motives which are quite different from what the system is meant to be.

“To have better police outfit, the Nigeria government must come out from its shell and properly administer the police force because if the government fail to do something now, in the next five years, the system will be worse than this.

“In those days when policemen are to be sent out, they are properly brief of what they are going to do and what they should do if there are dangers.

” SARS operatives which were set up to tackle violent crime when Anini the notorious armed robber was terrorising the people of Benin city, needed to be retrained with modern technologies equipment.

“Nigeria Police are still using 1914 equipment to combat 2017 crimes. By now the Nigeria police force supposed to have customized vehicles and not Hilux.

“Nigerian government had not done anything to show that they are interested in removing corruption in the country.

“Putting policemen on the roadblocks to check vehicles carrying criminating things create avenue for corruption

“Some of our leaders do not know the meaning of “shame”, they travel abroad and see how police are behaving and been treated over there.

“When they come back here in Nigeria they will put their own police on roadblocks and they will be blaming the police for not efficient.

“In European countries, you cannot see police blocking roads and started checking vehicles, there are cameras everywhere to do that.

“Nigerians have right to be angry with the police but how many Nigerians know what the police are facing. If the police are not proper shape, other things will not be in shape too,” Adetuyi said.
