A 25-year-old woman trafficked to Côte d'Ivoire has been rescued by the Delta State Police Command, which also arrested a suspected human trafficker linked to the case.
The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Ese Betty Isiorho, allegedly lured the victim abroad under the pretence of offering her vocational training in hairdressing.
Investigations revealed that upon arriving in Côte d'Ivoire, the young woman was instead forced into prostitution.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to trafficking both the rescued victim and another woman in her twenties to Côte d'Ivoire, where the pair were handed over to a woman known only as Madam Purity for the same purpose.
Delta Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday, August 2, noting that operatives of the Effurun Area Command apprehended Isiorho following a petition alleging that she had deceived the victim with false promises of overseas training.
According to Edafe, the rescued woman has since been returned to Nigeria, reunited with her family, and is currently receiving medical attention.
He added that efforts are ongoing to rescue the second victim, still believed to be in Côte d'Ivoire, and to track down other members of the suspected trafficking syndicate.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police for the Delta State Command, Yemi Oyeniyi, commended the officers involved in the operation and reaffirmed the command's commitment to combating human trafficking and other forms of organised crime.
