Model Who Killed Nigerian Boyfriend Pleads Guilty

A Miami OnlyFans model who fatally stabbed her Nigerian boyfriend at their Edgewater condo four years ago is set to spend just two years in prison after striking a plea deal on Monday, August 10.

Courtney Clenney killed 27-year-old Christian Obumseli in April 2022.

She had originally been charged with second-degree murder, a charge that carried a possible sentence of up to 30 years, but she pleaded guilty on Monday to manslaughter instead.

Under the deal, Clenney was sentenced to six years in prison followed by five years of probation, along with a mental health evaluation and treatment.

Having already spent four years in custody since her 2022 arrest, she will now serve roughly two more years, though her attorneys say it could work out to as little as 18 to 20 months.

Clenney appeared calm in her orange jail uniform as she accepted the plea, but grew emotional when Obumseli's mother addressed the court.

"Nothing can describe what it feels like for a mother to stand at the grave of her child," Obumseli's mother said.

"There are also the things that will never happen for me now that he's gone. The birthdays, the holidays we will not celebrate with him, the conversations we will never have, the person he would continue to become, those losses continue much longer after today's court case ends."

Clenney had told detectives she grabbed a knife only to defend herself. "I grabbed a knife, and I said, 'Don't come anywhere close to me. I have absolutely no intention of using it,'" she said.

Prosecutors, however, pointed to a pattern of escalating aggression toward Obumseli, citing videos from 2022 and 2024 as evidence.

Her attorneys maintained she was the victim of an abusive relationship and acted in self-defence.

After the hearing, Clenney's defense attorney, Frank Prieto, described the plea deal as a "common sense" decision.

Her father, Kim Clenney, spoke of relief that the case was finally nearing its end.

"What matters to me now is that for the first time in more than four years there is an end in sight. Courtney has a future ahead of her, as her father, I'm looking forward to that day that she can begin living her life," he said.

"I am looking forward to the day I can sit across from her face-to-face and hug her and tell her how much I love her."

Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said the agreement had the full backing of Obumseli's family.

"With this plea agreement, Christian Obumseli's family finally heard what they long sought: Courtney Clenney accepting full responsibility for his death. This plea was reached in full consultation and approval of Christian's family," she said.

"The Assistant State Attorneys handling this case have remained focused on the core evidence that Clenney stabbed Christian Obumseli as part of a pattern of escalating violence toward him. While nothing can heal the wounds caused on that day in April, I hope today's guilty plea brings his family a measure of justice too long denied."

Prosecutors at one point accused Clenney and her parents of illegally accessing Obumseli's laptop, but those computer-related charges were later dropped after a judge ruled that investigators had improperly obtained evidence protected by attorney-client privilege.

Before his death, posts attributed to Obumseli expressing disparaging views about black women had surfaced online, drawing backlash from parts of the black community.

Even after Clenney's sentencing, which many have called lenient, some have continued to withhold sympathy for Obumseli over those earlier remarks.
