The Bridge to Great Marital Destiny
On a faithful working day in Lagos, Nigeria, I had a course to go from the mainland to Island and if you are conversant with Lagos environ you will know that you need to go through a bridge to get to Island. And in fact, one most popular of the bridges available to motorists is the 3rd mainland bridge.
Hundreds of thousands of vehicles ply this route 24/7. The 3rdmainland bridge is critical to business activities in the megacity. And I could remember during the last administration between 2011-2015, the Federal Government did a major renovation on the bridge.
During the period of renovation that lasted between three to six months, motorists went through stress and tough plying the bridge. Motorists spent hours on the bridge because one lane was closed while the engineers were repairing and vice versa.
On a normal day, if there is no traffic, one could go from one end of the bridge to the other within fifteen minutes but had to spend like three to four hours on the road due to the reconstruction work.
There is bridge that guarantees a great and fulfilling marital life, and according to words of David Holt,
“Communication is the sum of all things a person does when he wants to create understanding in the mind of another. It is a bridge of meaning. It involves a systematic and continuous process of telling, listening and understanding.”
In his words, communication is the bridge that creates meaning and understanding in the minds of your spouse. He then sums it up by saying communication is the bridge of meaning. It then implies that without communication in a marriage there won’t be meaning and understanding. If you desire a great marriage, there is only one important “bridge” that will take you there. The bridge is communication. If you cut out the bridge of communication in your marital relationship, you might be delaying your journey in life for several years compared to when you could have achieved within days or even minutes.
The other part of what David referred to as “a systematic and continuous process of telling, listening and understanding”, is what is referred to effective communication.
At this level of communication, there is what is called mutual understanding. This has gone beyond the level of just creating meaning and understanding, however, both parties understand each other without any bias or misunderstanding. This level of effective communication is compared to the state where both are now on the highway of communication riding into greatness.
Communication cannot be said to be complete without the two parts which are telling and listening. If you are only speaking without listening you have started cutting off the link bridge to a successful marriage with your spouse.
And if you are only concentrated on listening alone without making important contributions to your spouse when necessary, you are also involved in the cutting out of the bridge.
To caption this in a succinct and simple manner, communication is the bridge for a fulfilling marital destiny. Without which man may be stranded and end up being a failure in marriage.
