As we gear up for the upcoming elections in 2019, it has become imperative to look into the Independent Electoral Commission’s (INEC) register so as to ascertain the voter’s strength in terms of numbers and where these numbers are coming from in terms of regions/geopolitical Zones.

The North-West geopolitical zone has the highest number of registered voters in the country with a total of 18,505,984 voters, according to statistics obtained by The PUNCH from the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The South-West zone, which is made up of Ekiti, Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Osun and Oyo state, comes second with a total number of 14,626,800 registered voters, while the South-East which has the lowest number of states has 8,293,093 registered voters.

According to statistics Lagos 6,048,156 registered voters, while Kano follows closely in a second position with 5,149,070 voters. Bayelsa on the list surprisingly has the lowest number of registered voters with 754,394, with the FCT having a total of 952,815. So far, the total number of registered voters across the country as at January 2018 is 73,944,312, however, INEC projects that the number of voters might certainly exceed 80 million before December 2018(which is the deadline for Voter’s Registration)

The total number of registered voters in 2015 was 68,833,479, with the increasing voter’s education and political awareness in the country, this number is expected to triple in the coming months, with over 5,110,836 persons registering between April 2017 (when the continuous voter’s registration began) and January 2018.

Meanwhile, the number of uncollected PVC’s remains high as less than half of the registered voters have collected their PVC’s. Lagos, according to INEC, has over 1.4million uncollected voter cards. As the Elections draws closer and closer we expect a robust voter’s register. And an activity packed election year.
