AT THE TOP OF NAF AFFAIRS
By Warrant Officer Ishola Rukayat Ajoke
A member of the Senate Committee on the Nigerian Air Force, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, representing Lagos Central has canvassed for an increase in the number of females involved in strategic decision-making roles of the Nigerian Air Force, insisting that women are still very much in the minority in NAF higher echelon, representing less than 1%. The Senator made this assertion during the Committee’s oversight tour of capital projects of the NAF in Lagos Area that was approved in the 2017 appropriation budget.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu argued that it is essential that measures to open all positions to them to develop flexible career paths and systematically take the gender dimension into account in all operations be carried out by the Nigerian Air Force. She stressed “Issues concerning women in the Air Force should be seriously and systematically pursued by military planners. They should examine questions and policies pertaining to women to ensure the participation of women in top management”. This is coming just as 2 female officers trained in Westline Aviation, South Africa were recently winged to join the rank of fighter pilots in the NAF.
